5 New Ideas for Mastering the Updo from Milan Fashion Week

If there has been one unifying beauty statement this week in Milan, it is that, whether knotted, pinned, or twisted, you’re going to be putting your hair up come fall. At Fendi earlier this week, hairstylist Sam McKnight crafted beautifully undone twists that were finished with leather headbands, signifying the kind of woman who might invest in an major statement coat but isn’t overly precious when it comes to her hair. That same day at Max Mara, McKnight dreamed up something for the modern bombshell at heart: Air-dried waves were manipulated into Marilyn Monroe–esque faux bobs to create visual space between the models’ necks and the lapels of their camel hair coats.

Pinning the hair up—and elongating the neck—seemed to be on the mind of hairstylist Guido Palau, too, who created a refined low, elegant knot for a handful of girls at Bottega Veneta, then shifted gears for Dolce & Gabbana this morning with a pretty chignon decorated by a few jeweled hair accessories. But perhaps his most fresh and forward-thinking idea arrived in the form of the high ponytails Palau crafted for Prada, securing them into a sort of girlish pouf by way of a glittering floral barrette. Here, five reasons why hair is certainly looking up.
