Sometimes, it can be challenging to look nice, be modern and stylish, yet subtle, on a summer evening out with the girls in Maine. But, I think I figured it out.....

This is what we live for!

It was a warm and humid day, but I could tell that it was going to be a bit cool on this evening out with two of my favorite girlfriends. We were headed down to McLaughlin's At The Marina and I thought there might be some great conversation and a fire pit involved. Guess what? I was right. If you have not been down to McLaughlin's At The Marina yet, I suggest you take some time to do so this summer. The food is fabulous and the music is great. Located in Hampden, it doesn't seem that far away for those who live in the Bangor area, yet you feel like you went on a mini vaca just for a few hours.

 While eating lunch there one afternoon with my sister, I recognized that there was a fire pit outside and chairs gathered around. I asked Kim, the owner, "What goes on out there?" She replied to me, "Magic." 

And she is right.

That is just what happened between me and my girlfriends there that night.

I decided that a black tank top from Talbots covered with this little shawl from Mexicali Blues would do the trick. It would look modern and chic, yet keep me warm enough on this semi cool Maine summer night.

And of course I chose to wear vintage jewelry from The Canny Canary.

My gold cuff is vintage Monet. Cuffs look so cool in the summer. They really show up well when worn with sleeveless or short sleeve tops.

{Do add bright accessories!}

It's getting warm out there and before we know it we will be HOT. Personally, I am looking forward to it! Here are some do's and don'ts when it comes to staying fashionable this summer:

Do own a pair of awesome sunglasses that are comfortable. Splurge a little if you can. 

Don't wear pedal pushers. They cut everyones leg in the wrong spot and they are extremely unflattering. Wear cropped or ankle pants instead. 

Do wear skirts instead of shorts whenever you can. They are more universally flattering.

Don't let your bra straps show when you are wearing a tank top. They make some very comfortable strapless bras out there. You NEED to find one that works for you.

Do get a pedicure at least every four weeks. If money is tight you should always make time to do your own at home pedi. You will be wearing sandals and you don't want to be embarrassed by torn up toes. If you haven't had time for the pedi, skip the sandals and wear a pair of ballet flats that cover your toes instead.

Don't wear eyeliner or mascara on your bottom lash line. It will melt and smudge and you will look like you have two black eyes. Instead only wear eyeliner and mascara on your top lids. Waterproof isn't always necessary but may be for those who have deep set eyes or droopy eyelids.

Do wear a hat when you are in the sun to protect your precious facial skin. I can't wear SPF on my face due to my sensitive skin, so I ALWAYS wear a hat when I am outside in the sun. Plus hats are very cute and stylish.

Don't wear synthetic fabrics in the hot weather. Instead opt for natural fibers such as cotton and linen.

Do throw on a cute cotton sleeveless blouse with anything!

Don't think that you have to bare it all. Just because it's summer doesn't mean that wearing a tube top is for everyone. Opt for a loose fitting cami instead to stay cool and look chic.

Do wear an all natural deodorant that is aluminum free to keep you fresh all day and don't hesitate to carry it in your purse so that you can reapply as needed. 

Don't forget to moisturize. Even though you are sweating, the sun can still be drying. Just opt for a lighter lotion instead, preferably one with SPF 30 or more.

Do wear maxi dresses!
