Which SXSW Beauty Look Is Right for You? A Packing Guide by Festival

It’s a serious question these days—what started as a much-loved local music festival has become a marathon of events that now includes one of the world’s biggest tech meet-ups, an indie band extravaganza, and a cult alt film conference, too.

With so much going on, even an expert dopp-kit packer can get confused. Because beyond their SXSW branding and quirky Austin appeal, the music, film, and tech fests don’t have much in common aesthetically speaking. It would not, for example, be a great idea to arrive amongst the MacBook-wielding attendees at a tech workshop with mosh pit hair and a backpack full of body glitter (unless that is also your daily office look).

Not to worry—we’ve mapped out a series of stylish, event-specific hair and makeup ideas to take you through each of the SXSW conferences, whether you’re staring down Ryan Gosling at a screening, introducing your company’s killer app, or standing front row at the Clean Bandit show.

The Look: When alternating between Austin’s warm, rainy spring weather and cool, dry indoor screening rooms, frizz is almost inevitable. Embrace the added volume with artfully mussed texture. To make the signs of residual jet lag vanish, try a revitalizing face mask and reliable eye cream. Then, brighten up with a bold matte lip color (perfect for commanding attention at that after-screening Q&A), defined brows, and dab of highlighter for a romantic, screen-lit touch.
