London’s New Speed Salon: Why a Visit to Superstylist Josh Wood’s Hair Parlor Is Mandatory

“This my first step into ‘social grooming,’ ” says the London supercolorist Josh Wood, speaking about his latest venture, the Cheeky Hair studio at Barber & Parlour in London’s Shoreditch neighborhood. “It’s a place to meet with friends, eat, drink, and groom—all at the same time.” Josh certainly knows a thing or two about launching a salon where people come to hang out as often as they do to have their hair done. When he first opened his self-titled salon, the Josh Wood Atelier, in West London’s Holland Park in 2011, it quickly became home base for his black-book roster of clients, which includes Laura Bailey, Elle Macpherson, Amanda Harlech, and Jemima Khan. With no mirrors on the walls (you can’t see your hair until it’s done!), iPads loaded with personal playlists for clients, and upcycled sofas to sit and chat, it was like being inside a friend’s apartment . . . that also happened to be a salon. A small jewel box space on the top floor of Liberty London followed shortly thereafter. Now, with the opening of Cheeky Hair, Josh aims to reinvent the salon concept once again—this time with an emphasis on speed.

For those who like to luxuriate in a vintage-style barber’s chair, there are plenty of full-service options on the menu. But for jet-setting It girls and Fashion Week editors on the go, the real draw may be Josh’s fast services: Think bang trims, bedhead blowouts, root touch-ups, and quick conditioning treatments. Each one was designed with an in-and-out attitude in mind and walk-in appointments are encouraged. There’s also the Experimentation Station, where you can try out a new mussed-up braid or messy bun. The idea, says Josh, was to reimagine your look “without too much of a long-term commitment.” Brit-girl, effortlessly cool hair in an instant? Check.
